Rumour mill has it he was intended to play a similar postition/role as Berb, so had been training with the strikerforce for the last season or two (that's roughly how long we've had him) to try and pick up as much brilliance as possible and be a star in our team of the future. It was thought that he could get a lot from Berb, he's got a lot of potential.

I don't know that much about him pre-Euros, but I don't care - we need at least one more striker by the end of Aug, even if it's the Kaboul of strikers!

(by the way, did anyone notice that Harry played Kaboul in midfield last week? Why could him and us see that K's not a defender, but it slipped by Jol, Ramos and Comolli???)

I was under the impression it was us holding it up the whole way through - I like to think that Levcy was making them squirm! There was acknowledgement on Sky Sports news that MU had got the paperwork in at about 11.20, I reckon it was Levy umming and aaahing over it, and I think good on him - it's not often teams make them so flustered, he knew all along he was going to sell him Berbs an had already had two successful buys that day, so why not make them sweat it out?

I'm more pissed off with Keane too, Berb was always honest about his intentions - he wanted to be part of a club breaking into the Champions League, but when that's not coming together as fast as you'd hoped and the best of the best are begging for you, why not go? I'm not saying I'm happy about it, but I understand it entirely. Keane, on the other hand, lied his way to it, so now I really hope someone - anyone, but pref us - push Liverpool to 5th (even if it means Arse being 3rd).

As for Christmas buys, how would you guys feel about Owen? It looks like he'll be going somewhere, what do you reckon to him being at the Lane?

To be honest, I'm pretty glad about that.

Managerial transfer window's actually been suggested before by a couple of managers (I think Stuart Pearce was one of them pre-firing), and I don't hink it's such a bad idea. Without wishing to harp on back too much, if there had been one in place with Jol I'm confident he would have had enough to time ride out the bad patch, as well as massively reduced pressure for a few months, and turned the fortunes around. I can't remember whether others from last season were fired or sacked now (Jose & Grant were probably both within window), but I reckon there are a good few who may have been the same.

Not to mention the instability it brings which hugely affects the results. Again, Chelsea & us are examples, and all that stuff with Benitez really hurt Liverpool's form last season... but then maybe it's not a transfer window that's needed, it's some common bloody sense from the board.

I don't think O'Hara or (to a lesser extent) JJ would be able to take the holding mid role - they'd end up around the wrong goal mouth when they were supposed to be defending.

The danger with messing with the number of defenders is that of man marking, I don't think our defence is sophisticated enough to be able to cope with the necessary switching of roles & players covered, although I quite like the idea of playing with two holding midfielders (as long as it doesn't end up being the team bus parked in front of goal).

A lot of our midfielders are actually quite creative, it would be nice to get them into roles where they can use this instead of having to stick rigidly to formation - do you remember the games when Malbranque and Lennon suddenly and seamlessly switched wings last season? Giving them a chance to roam really paid off in their play, and also really confused defenders. I'd like to see the likes of Lennon, O'Hara, Modric and Giovanni giving that a go.

    Ever the optimist!

Fuck it, I'm going for the win - what else do we have to lose?!?

More realistically I'm expecting a score draw, but I firmly believe we will make it through the group stages (football poetry has got to see getting dumped out by Hamburg whupping us at home just as our PL form is the best it's been since pre-CC) so we'll have to get a win somewhere on the way.

1-2 or 2-2. Possbily 1-1, but suggesting three scores is playing it too safe os I'm just whispering that one.

Nah, it's traditional to draw the goons in the semi's!

Still think that'd be a cracking final, after last year's debacle do you think Wenger would still 'keep the faith with his young guns' then? Fab, before you start getting all offended and ruining this thread for the rest of us, that's a genuine question not a dig.

I'd like to take the credit, but I got emailed these the day after The Great Game and stumbled across them last week - I've been waiting for the right moment to bring them up again!

I'd also like to thank you all, no-one thought to comment on the fact that I called our less experienced players "testes in real games" rather than "tested in real games"! There's a freudian typo if ever I saw one!

benidorm, don't let this tosser piss you off, you get these losers here all the time - just ignore him and carry on the football.

Don't fancy Downing myself, and he's said before he's got no interest in leaving Middlesborough, I think he's one of the few proper '1 club' footballers left in the game.

I'd be well happy if we got Foster.
