I just don't have much to say of late... earlier in the season I would have gotten irritated by sweeping statements about the new players before we'd had a chance to see what they're really capable of. I'm making up for it with a superlong post today apparently...
Back to AVB, I see what you're saying about the style of play, but I think AVB's first role was to cut costs, hence the big clear out on arrival, and the second was to add some consistency and almost security. I loved 'Arry (and I didn't expect to!) and thought it was unfair for him to leave how and when he did, but I didn't have the same confidence as I do now; no opposition stands out as a worry anymore, whereas several used to.
The style isn't ideal, but I do feel like there's a 'yet' attached to that - it's still a manager with new players seeking his best team, and there have been flashes of the flair we'd all like. I haven't seen the exact comments after Hull last week, but I quite like that it wasn't the usual "best fans in the world" line that's trotted out without thinking; it was ballsy to challenge the stands and paid off, and sort of invited the fans in to the 'inner circle' by making out there's a genuine role for us to play.
I miss the 4-4 days from 6 or 7 years ago (for a recent example), but I don't miss the assumption that we'll lose to the likes of Man U and Chelsea. I accept this is down to changes for them as much as us, but why not be a bit optimistic that we can have both the flair and finish by the end of the season?? I can dream...

He's done it backwards for a footballer but certainly the sensible way; started with the dodgy gambling behaviour, moved on to a bit of light simulation, then had a few good games and became nationally acclaimed!
Good on him, let's hope he's got a bright future at the Lane.

Also, did Arsenal just want to break our transfer record with Ozil??
I would like to remind you all of his quote from about 3 days ago about Bale...
“The prices today are just linked with the financial power and the desire of the buyer. But it is impossible to #$%$ a market where you can say ‘this is the normal price for this player because that is his quality’. That has gone completely because in transfers you go from zero to £10million and afterwards from £30million to £80million but that is not linked with the quality of the players, just the financial power of the buyer. For me, there are very few players who you can justify paying over £50million for.”
Well, now Levy's taken the day off I've got to get my kicks somewhere...
What's happened in the last 28 hours?! It all looked so promising...
We haven't had a good deadline day in ages, now yesterday rolls around and it's the worst quality football - both teams - in a London derby for years, not to mention a disappointing result (one goal totally made by our own mistakes), and now the gooners are having an exciting deadline day and our biggest news is Capoue's injury is 'only' likely to keep him out for 4 weeks!
I miss the days of the van der Vaart's, the Robbie return (for excitement more than impact), even Louis Saha. I know we were all keen to get more consistency in the team, but this wasn't really what I had in mind...

Thought Kaboul was better now? And what's happened to Vert?
Think most people have just been enjoying the sun and are bored of the same conversations about Bale...
So, any thoughts on the fixture list? Two things struck me:
1. 3rd match seems really quick for us to be facing Arsenal (not to mention inconvenient; I've got a party that day)
2. I know there's no such thing as an easy match, and when it's in practice I'll be terrified, but there weren't many fixtures that really worried me. Not many caught my eye as a toughie. That's certainly new, and has got to be a good thing, yeah?

Will technical director be the same as director of football (probably a key directorship at a football club...)? AVB's been vocal in asking for one anyway, if it's how the manager wants to work I guess we trust it; it wasn't right for 'Arry or Jol (too hard to say either way for Ramos), but he's clearly a different sort of gaffer.
Problem is, we've not been getting as many last minute buys in the last few windows; I've been thoroughly disappointed by the last 2 or 3 D-Days.

I'd not seen the final punishment. What a thing to do; the fact that he's not appealing speaks volumes, but in his defense so does the fact that 3 months are suspended and he's being allowed to carry out the suspension over the summer. Silly silly silly silly boy.
I'd love to know what the charge was. Hopefully it's all in the past now, he's got the potential for a good career ahead of him and I'd hate for it to tarnish him or our beloved club.

Wait, a 5 second Google told me I'm wrong, there's yet another year on it. You'd think his pride would have accepted a 'leaving by mutual consent' by now... he appeared to genuinely want to play for a while, seems he's happy to keep collecting the pay check now.

I'll not comment on BAE as me & Sfer have gone back & forth on this at least 100 times in over the last few years! I reckon we'll agree to disagree.
Isn't Bentley already gone? I thought he was on loan this season and his contract expired this summer?

Just saw this too, worrying times. He's withdrawn from the U21 squad as a result of it.
I hope there's nothing in it too, I don't like to see it anywhere but much less associated to our club.

So bloody typical Spurs! Didn't get to watch it, but it sounded like a typical Spurs-MU game; we dominate in possession & performance, winning until 78 mins then concede 2 goals. Cracking effort though, and positive signs for the next few years, good on them. Think I'll make an effort to get to at least some Next Gen games next season.
Also, on my previous tangent from U21 thread, apparently if Chelsea & Arsenal had needed a playoff it would have been at Villa Park; seems a bizarre choice.

Argh, apologies! I was thinking of the Arsenal away game when I said Barnet! Turns out ours is generally our training ground, occasionally WHL.
- not_blonde_really not_blonde_really May 15, 2013 14:43 Flag
I think it had already been allocated as the final venue, like Wembley would be for most cups - I don't imagine OT is the U21s 'home' venue, I think ours is Barnet!
Pity, had it conveniently been accidentally at WHL I'd have tried to go. Might give it a watch on the tellybox/online.
Speaking of playoffs, I've just seen an article saying that Chelsea & Arsenal would need one for 3rd & 4th if Arsenal beat Newcastle 2-1 and Chelsea draw 0-0 with Everton, which is possible. To be played at "a neutral venue", you reckon they'd pick our gaff?!
- not_blonde_really not_blonde_really May 14, 2013 22:20 Flag
Update on that; MU won, and they've been our nearest second for much of the season (although quite far down). Final's at OT next Monday eve, 7pm ko to be precise.

Hear hear - our youth teams are looking really exciting at the moment; think the other semi's being played today.
We've also had Adam Smith, Andros Townsend, Steven Caulker & Danny Rose all called up to the U21 England squad for the summer championship - thought Tommy C might get a look in too & possibly Kane, but no.

Thanks Alan, I hope we do too!
Geordies safe today, and Sunderland not far off, next weekend will be tense times for a whole lot of teams. It'll all depend on how Wigan manage to pick themselves up after this weekend for Tuesday's game, there's a lot riding on that at both ends of the table. If they don't get anything out of it they're gone, but if they do you'd think it'd be them or Villa to go... too close to call.
They were absolutely the better team yesterday, and I love that the 2 domestic cups this season have been deservedly won by Swansea and Wigan, it brings back "a bit of the magic". That said, Wigan are in this league position year after year after year and they scrape through, but they're not building. the NE teams fluctuate which sorts of make me feel like they 'earn' their place, and with the Villa transformation this season it would be harsh for them to go down as it's starting to come together. IMHO, naturally...

Don't be ridiculous, you couldn't stop yourself talking to us if you tried!
Ideally I want Wigan to go down, but I'll be cheering them on no end on Tuesday...

I got Chelsea 75, us 72 and Arsenal 71. But I also put us at 1-1 draw with Chelsea and put no intelligent thought into it (e.g. "Wigan? Let's say 3-1!"). I swear Arsenal are cheating anyway, having Man U the game after they clinch the title and QPR the week after they're relegated...
Still, it's only a game...

Squeaky bum, squeaky bum, squeaky squeaky bum bum!
I just did the BBC results predictor ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/predictor/default.stm), did each match on immediate gut feeling except for ours & yours on last day of the season, checked the table before them. Somewhat unsurprisingly, this spurs fan's gut says Arsenal will get the coveted 5th spot, with Wigan going down on GD. Chelsea were in 3rd.
I'm ok with this outcome.
