Ha! That did make me chuckle. A Spurs fan of all fans accusing another of 'crowing a little bit too early'!
That aside...a long way to go yet but I am liking the new found confidence at Arsenal today, something the club has desperately lacked in recent years.
I can't wait for Cazorla and Orzil to gel.
Everybody that knows anything about football knows that the results Ar$e have achieved have been very flattering Fab. Most of them could very easily have gone the other way but your luck won't last all season. You are crowing a little bit too early old boy!
Can't argue with any of that John. Hugo is a great keeper but he took some big risks which on another day could have cost us badly. Someone, and when I find out who it was I will be having words, told Dawson he could play football. He can tackle, and he can head the ball, and he can pass the ball as long as its no more than 20 yards but apart from that he should stick to what he is good at. Siggy IS too slow to be a great player and he does give the ball away too easily BUT he has also been very influential so far. Dembele looks unfit but has always looked like that. He has had plenty of chances to prove he can produce and so far he hasn't. We have plenty of midfield options so I would not be upset if someone else got a chance. The only thing that worries me is the same as always - we just don't kill teams off. Of course we should beat the likes of Cardiff but when we play top 4 teams we just don't seem to have that self belief that we can win. Man U have got that belief (well they did) that they will score and win and that has served them very well over the years. I am just hoping that all the new players, that have not caught that lack of confidence thing, bring a sense of optimism with them that spreads throughout the club and they just go out to win without any fear.
Well, at least we were persistant, and got rewarded at the end, but in a game like that, we could just as well of lost it. When the defense has so little to do, it requires a bit of common sense, so im not sure what sort of game Daws thought he was playing in, but at times he was at best, reckless, and Hugo, well I don't think he knew the game had started with his first half display. I still think Siggy is a weak link. While dangerous in and around area, he seems to fade from games, and his ball retension is not very good, and lack off pace obvious. I like Dembele, but again I wonder about his stamina. Very good in first halves, then seems to me he fades from game. All in all, I was happy with our play going forward and thought there was good link up all round.
Difficult comparison given their styles of plan. When both are on song, I would go for Ade - as his 'style' is more to my liking. But given that both appear to have a habit of dropping form on a regular basis, I'd rather that AVB had tried to get in another striker in the window and sold on the pair of them.
hahahahahaha.......................and Bentner is a far better player than...............Giroud! Actually, thinking about it, there is not much to choose between them!! Says it all really.
Its only a scattergun approach if AVB does not have a plan. I agree, as I have said before, I worry about Walker - his defending is not good sometimes - Naughton is not good enough (yet), Rose is not the best LB in the PL by some way and LB is not Verthongen's best position for us. But at least we now have cover and players that want to play for Spurs.
Assuming Adebyor has played his last game for Spurs (unless we end up with our own version of Bentner) , we are still light up front. Personally, I don't like playing with only one striker but I don't know whether AVB's plan is to play Erikson more alongside Soldado or not. As I have said before, playing with two permanent wide players can leave gaps in midfield and unless they are told to get in the box when play is coming down the other flank, we are short in the box which is a curse of ours - or has been.
What I do know, IMO obviously, is that we have a bigger, better squad than ever before. Now its down to AVB and as far as I am concerned, the jury is still out on that one.
Do you not think we're looking light at right back (with Walker and Naughton) and left back (with Rose and Vertigo at a push) and up front with Soldado and Daffy (on the assumption - maybe false - that Ade has already played his last game) - both of whom are also getting on.
Hence my comment re the scattergun. A blanket overhaul of midfield, but no specific fix of certain areas.
I think my perception is that either AVB doesn't even believe in himself, or the purchases last season weren't his. We have hardly seen Holtby in a Spurs shirt. Dempsey came and went (even though he did score a dozen or so). Glyfi - looks like he may get a game, but then who doesn't play - and Dembele...?
So we spend the Modric/VDV money overhauling midfield - lose two and bring in 3 - and the next season lose another 3 MFs and buy in 5 - and at the same potentially sideline the players only bought the season before. It just doesn't seem 'planned' to me.
Personally, I have no idea what selection will ultimately be successful as I have not seen enough of the new players to call it - probably the same as AVB. We know they are good players but that does not mean they will "gel" (I hate that word but....) so we will have to wait and see. The point is - we now have choices whereas last season we didn't. Walker worries me. His positional play when defending is very questionable. Rose is not quite good enough IMO, but apart from that my only worry is AVB. His tactics and team selection are not always inspiring although I am basing that on the "old" squad so I am willing to see what he does now that we have some class players to choose from. If Erikson plays more up alongside Soldado then fine but if we are going to play with one striker we are reliant on the midfielders/wingers getting in the box and we have struggled with that in the past. Time will tell.......
Well, I had to say something in the end didn't I!! Hudd is waddling around for Hull proving that he was never good enough. BAE has gone and I don't really care where. Tom Carroll might - but its a big MIGHT - come back a better player. So, all in all, I could not have asked for a better January. We have a bigger, better squad with cover in almost every position. All that needs to happen now is for the new players to gel with everybody and AVB to pick the right team and play the right tactics - where could it possibly go wrong!!
I am with you John. I don't see it as scattergun either although it might look that way to some. The fact is we were short in terms of a squad so we had to buy "extra" to have some depth. The fact that we got rid - at last - of some of the deadwood is even better. The players that are now not regular first choice are at least good enough to come in and potentially make an impression. The only position we are short in now is LB although I am not sure about playing Soldado on his own up front but that seems to be the way AVB wants to go. We will see if it works won't we.
I'm not impatient - as I'm happy to give AVB til the end of this season to judge him and the new boys at least a couple of seasons to see how they fit.
But football today is about results rather than performances, and although I'm happy to wait and see, I doubt that Mr Levy will be happy with spending £100M if we don't improve. And improve in that context isn't just playing prettier/better football. So that would imply to me that CL is a minimum - and that requires goals being scored.
My concern is that time is a luxury - Wenger basically said the same - that changing squads wholesale can be a dodgy thing. And I know you don't think that buying a new midfield and forward line is a scattergun approach, but it's hardly a '...we have an issue there...let's fix that...' type approach. And now to find what 'blends' and works may take time as there are a fair few combinations.
Hopefully, AVB will find the blend in the next few games - and the goals will come from across the team.
Jlock, I'm not sure your being a tad impatient here. It seems to me that now we have Eriksen threading passes behind the defenders that Soldado should soon start scoring regular. He hit the post with one clever backheel and should of scored with a header. I think Lamela is expected to score a few when he settles, and Paulinho think will reach double figures as the season goes on. At the moment, the season has been stop start, with the internationals, so the players haven't really had much time on the training ground, and it'll probably be November, December before we start to see the understanding develop to a consistant level.
The other point about your " 5 midfielders ". I know they are classed as midfielders, but I count only Paulinho, Capoue as MF and Chadli, Lamela as wingers/widemen and Eriksen as the playmaking no 10. As things stand when all are fit, your got ...Paulinho, Capoue, Sandro, Dembele and Eriksen as any 3 from 5 to start, with 2 as cover, and out wide we have got Chadli, townsend, Lennon, Lamela so any 2 with 2 cover. As with most teams nowadays, we play with a lone striker, so obviously Soldado has been bought as the main man, and Daffy will have to be content with being back-up, and playing in the cup games. As far as Siggy and Holtby are concerned, if the new signings live up to expectations, then they will just be squad members and cup players. I would think, when all available, the starting eleven would be
Norwich - not a bad performance - and for virtually 90 minutes.
Still a bit ponderous in the final 3rd - and I don't recall Soldado being presented with that many chances.
Where will the goals come from this season? Will Townsend / Paulinho / Chadli / Eriksen / Lamela / Glyfi / Soldado fill the gap left by Dempsey/Bale/(Ade-Daffy)?
So far Townsend seems to like to have a shot or two - whether then that diminishes his role as a provider - and Glyfi has obviously now scored a couple.
Looks like it will be difficult to tell, until AVB decides on which of the players make his main 11 - as I'm still not sure, if Glyfi is going to start with Dembele and Townsend, why we bought 5 midfielders.
Wait and see what evolves over the next few weeks I suppose.
Well, I'm a bit lost. We have less than 2 people per position in defence - and unless Vertigo plays left back, we're a bit exposed there (given BAE on loan) - BUT we have what, about 11 midfielders for 4/5 positions?:
Paul the Alienho
Then only 3 up front - one of which AVB doesn't appear to rate at all (Ade), and the other that he seems to have the same faith in as the other managers we've had recently (Daffy).
So, instead of 'targetting' specific areas, it just seemed to me that AVB blanket reinforced the midfield in general. I'm not saying that the purchases aren't good (only time will tell - but I like the way Capoue has played) - I just wonder how many of the purchases then from only a season ago will be still here by the start of next season (I would hazard a guess that Glyfi and Holtby will go - and Dembele may) - and if that is the case I'm just not sure the temporary stop gap approach is a route that I like.
Having said that, we'll probably end up getting 3rd or above this season!
Not sure what they're doing, but when I realised that Yahoo had dropped the links and that people may then have a problem finding the site again, I went down and 'rated' all the old posts for as many unique users as I could find - so they all hopefully got an EMail from yahoo with a link back to the forum. I tried to explain it on the thread
