- Jorge Lorenzo has pole, ahead of Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner, but who knows at this point if either he or Stoner will be fit and able to race tomorrow. They both had dramatic late crashes, right next to each other on the track in the closing stages.
0' Rossi comes burning down to the finish line... 1:21.845! That puts him second for tomorrow's American GP.
0' Dani Pedrosa trumps everyone on the second row and clocks a time of 1:22.113. He will start fourth tomorrow.
1' Rossi still doesn't break Lorenzo's mark, but he makes the line in time to have one more go...
1' Elias crashes into the top of the second row with a time of 1:22.146! Here comes Rossi...
2' Rossi runs a #plus;1:22 time, so he has one final stab at pole position here at Laguna Seca...
2' But now Stoner goes flying off! He's launched off his bike at Turn Three and skids off the track on his side! Can Rossi take advantage of this?
3' Lorenzo is on the gravel again! This time he's struggling to stand up after leaping and twisting through the and across the track! His lead will remain unprotected for the rest of the session now...
3' Hayden makes a final push and pushes himself up into the second row in sixth!
4' James Toseland is also struggling considering his good turn this morning, all the way down in 15th with a time over 1:23.8.
5' Nicky Hayden, a two-times winner here, still can't manage to get above 10th in this session.
6' Rossi is still chipping away at the top two, clocking up 1:21.927, but he remains third.
7' Several riders going for the softer tyres now as they aim to make that final push up the grid.
8' Don't forget - as if you would - that you can watch the race LIVE at 9.30pm on Sunday on British Eurosport (Sky 410 / Virgin Media 521); Also available on your PC via the Eurosport Player - click here to subscribe.
10' Stoner loses his grip and he's off the track! He pulled out of a corner and made for the safety of the gravel!
11' It looked as though Lorenzo was going to improve on that time, but he got stuck behind De Puniet in the final quarter of the lap.
12' Lorenzo steams around and makes a massive leap forward - he registers 1:21.678 to regain the lead!
13' Dovizioso, Pedrosa and Elias are leading the chasing pack.
15' Rossi can only cut his time down to 1:21.954, but that now means that the top three are seperated by less than half a second.
19' ... and he's even quicker this time around, clocking in at 1:21.910! Still some way to go and beat Lorenzo's fastest lap of the day set in FP2 though, and Lorenzo is back out on the track now.
20' With 20 minutes left of qualifying, Casey Stoner grabs pole with a time of 1:21.939, and he's going even quicker on his next lap...
22' Lorenzo has crashed out and has to sprint back to the pits! He may be leading now, but he must get his skates on if he is going to try and consolidate his lead.
24' Jorge Lorenzo's lead in the qualifying is still intact, with neither Stoner nor Rossi yet getting out again to try and snatch pole from him.
29' Dani Pedrosa edges close to the front row boys with a latest lap of 1:22.426.
29' So, at the halfway point Lorenzo is the only rider to go under 1:21 thus far.
30' Stoner slows down as he goes through the corkscrew. He slows right down and heads for the pits, and his pit crew go to work on the front of the bike.
31' Casey Stoner is back out on the track after rather a long break. Let's see if he can get his nose in front...
32' Rossi is shaving away at his time, though he remains third. Rossi pops a wheelie
35' Vale gets himself up into the top three with a time of 1:22.388.
36' Rossi is back out on the track, a second off the pace as he passes the midway point. He's just warming up though...
38' Lorenzo is the first man to go under 1 minute 21 seconds in qualifying.
40' Stoner reaffirms his position at the head of the field with a third of the hour gone, with a lap of 1:22.187.
42' Casey Stoner shaves a 10th off of Lorenzo's time, clocking up a mark of 1:22.269.
45' James Toseland is being pushed out of the gravel - he may be due another trip to the shop.
47' Dovizioso runs very close to Pedrosa's leading time, but he just can't beat his team-mate's mark.
49' Gibernau has rather a dodgy wobble as he tackles the corkscrew, costing him vital time.
50' Rossi has already switched bike once, and now Casey Stoner's team are beavering away in their garage.
52' Niccolo Canepa has skidded off at turn two. He walks away from his bike as the rear wheel still chugs along.
53' Casey Stoner is quickest at the moment, going round in a time of 1:22.665.
55' Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner are still on Vale's tail as we go into the eighth round of this year's championship: MotoGP rider standings
57' The track is all of 2.4 miles long. The only straight only allows the open up for a coupel of seconds before they have to slow down again.
59' It's a sunny day and the temperature is 21 degrees as the qualifying hour begins.

Rossi is exactly what a world champ should be......consistent and totally reliable, Jorge is a great rider but sometimes tries too hard and inevitably crashes, Stoner is a great rider too but cannot accept any form of defeat without an excuse. Yes, these guys will give Rossi a tough time now and then but Rossi will be world champ 2009 because he is mentally stronger and a more consistent racer!!!!!

go mister rossi, go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
baga mare valentino!!!
vale has constistantly great racing ability, even while carrying injuries (remember the race he won with a broken hand?)My family are huge rossi fans, even through the lean years, however, we've got a huge respect now for young lorenzo. the guts he showed last season racing while having to be picked up onto his bike was staggeringly brave. He's a perfect team-mate for the doctor. Stoner, though, is a bad loser, which i can't abide. No point in throwing the toys out of the pram when you don't get a win.
that scaffoid injury was dragged out for sympathy month after month, yet other riders get their heads down and race through the pain. Stoner seems to have undergone a personality removal operation during that wrist surgery and that's why he'll never replace the doctor in real bike fans' hearts.
Rossi is gonna wipe the floor with these punks tomorrow, he is and always will be the king ROSSI FOREVER
Poor Jorge, His ability to land in the hardest way possible isnt doing him any favours. Although combined with China last year, its a good advert for the resilience of X-lite helmets.
As for Stoner and rossi fever.....give the lad a break, to be racing as he is with a mystery illness is remarkable.
Rossi, the living motogp legend, smack these boys' @#$%! Everybody here knows you are the king, its just the euphoria over the desire to see these lil boys, stoner and jorge give u a run for your money...u r a true legend! Rossi for Seca Laguna.
Everyone says that Lorenzo is better than Rossi but let's not forget who made that bike. The doctor is one and he'll get it tomorrow. I wish I could see then in Canada as well
i hope casey and jorge will be a ok. my god those crashes looked NASTY. feel sorry for them. :(
ROSSI......tat race is all yours...smack stoner's A**.
has stoner got rossi fever, the last rider to have have that kind of fever was gibernau
