Live Commentary

  1. - What a race! Here's how they finished: 1-Casey Stoner, 2-Valentino Rossi, 3-Nicky Hayden, 4-Jorge Lorenzo, 5-Shinya Nakano, 6-James Toseland, 7-Andrea Dovizioso, 8-Colin Edwards, 9-Randy De Puniet, 10-Loris Capirossi.

  2. WIN!! STONER WINS!! Great performance. Rossi second, Hayden third. Lorenzo wins a pulsating race for fourth, followed by Nakano and Toseland, with Dovizioso in seventh.

  3. 27/27 Last lap, Stoner serene. But Rossi goes down the inside of Hayden and is second! Further back Toseland is still sixth and has a big job on his hands.

  4. 26/27 We spoke too soon - Rossi is all over Hayden. The American's tyres have gone and Rossi will surely take second.

  5. 26/27 How they stand: 1-Stoner, 2-Hayden, 3-Rossi, 4-Dovizioso, 5-Lorenzo, 6-Toseland, 7-Nakano.

  6. 25/27 DOVIZIOSO!! He somehow outdrags both Lorenzo and Toseland and goes fourth! Toseland is fourth wide and drops to sixth. He's still in this, though.

  7. 24/27 Lorenzo has greater straight-line speed, but Toseland is forcing him to go around the outside and the Spaniard cannot do it. Yet. Less than four laps left.

  8. 23/27 The top three looks settled, with Hayden surely out of Rossi's reach. Toseland remains fourth but my goodness he's under some pressure. If he holds on this will be an amazing performance.

  9. 22/27 Rossi is closing in on Hayden, but still has a three-second gap to bridge. Meanwhile Lorenzo tries to nudge his way past Toseland at the end of the start-finish straight but cannot make it stick.

  10. 21/27 Stoner's lead is now more than five seconds. Barring a fall - and he's had a few of those - the Australian will win on home tarmac.

  11. 19/27 Toseland has company - Dovizioso and Lorenzo all over the back of his Tech3 Yamaha. He certainly knows how to make his bike wide, but he must survive another nine laps like this.

  12. 17/27 Rossi is out of shape again! He has his eighth world championship in the bag and has already been off once this weekend - but there's no hint that he will ease off.

  13. 16/27 How they stand: 1-Stoner, 2-Hayden, 3-Rossi, 4-Toseland, 5-Dovizioso, 6-Lorenzo, 7-Nakano, 8-De Puniet, 9-Capirossi, 10-Edwards.

  14. 15/27 Pressure on James Toseland now. Rossi has got past again, and now Andrea Dovizioso closes in on the Briton. Great racing from the Italian.

  15. 14/27 Stoner has finally shaken off Nicky Hayden and surges clear. The gap between the front two is nearly two seconds, with Stoner pulling ahead by around half a second a lap.

  16. 12/27 Great duel between Rossi and Toseland, going back and fourth jockeying for position. A real bonus for Toseland, who had struggled over the middle portion of his first MotoGP season.

  17. 11/27 How they stand: 1-Stoner, 2-Hayden, 3-Toseland, 4-Rossi, 5-Lorenzo, 6-Nakano, 7-Dovizioso, 8-Edwards, 9-De Puniet, 10-Capirossi.

  18. 10/27 Rossi nearly comes off!! He loses his footing around a tight left-hander and is forced to cling on for dear life!

  19. 9/27 Toseland back into third!! He shows no respect to the eight-time world champion and muscles past him. Brilliant stuff!

  20. 8/27 Tremendous performance so far from Nicky Hayden, who is still right with Casey Stoner, less than two tenths back.

  21. 7/27 Rossi is into third ahead of Lorenzo and Toseland but the Briton attempts to hit back. Quite an all-Yamaha battle, this.

  22. 5/27 James Toseland outbrakes Jorge Lorenzo and elbows his way back into third! Great stuff from the Briton but he will soon have to deal with Rossi, who is reeling in that battle for third.

  23. 4/27 Ominous from Rossi, who is up to fifth and now chases James Toseland. Still Stoner in front with Nicky Hayden two tenths back.

  24. 3/27 A replay of that De Angelis crash shows he was perilous ly close to taking Valentino Rossi out. Jorge Lorenzo is up to third ahead of Toseland.

  25. 2/27 Stoner leads from Hayden with James Toseland in third! Rossi is already up to eighth and now De Angelis has gone! Frantic stuff..

  26. 1/27 GOOOOOO!!! Casey Stoner leads on lap one but there are three major excursions! Pedrosa falls and he is out of the race. Vermeulen and Guintoli also run off the track but they will rejoin.

  27. - Casey Stoner might have lost the world title to Valentino Rossi, but he has a point to prove from pole position. Rossi crashed in qualifying yesterday and starts from a lowly 12th position.

  28. - Welcome to LIVE coverage of the Australian MotoGP from Phillip Island!!
