If you hadn't been a footballer, what career would you have had instead?

I never thought of being anything other than a professional footballer, but looking back now if I had not made it then I would have had to have been enjoying the outdoor life working in another sport.

What was your first car?

It was a second-hand Ford Cortina, bought by my mum and dad in 1972 for £155. It was unique model, as it had four doors but only three of them opened.

What is the greatest song ever recorded?

Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty. Apart from the lyrics, there's a great bit of saxophone in it, which I love.

What's your TV guilty pleasure?

It's the current Britain's Got Talent. I think David Walliams and Simon Cowell work so well off each other. Walliams is so funny. It sounds a bit crass, me liking that, but we all sit down together as a family and watch it.

If somebody made a film of your life, which actor would you like to play you?

Robert De Niro. I never miss any of his films. Whether it's a comedy like Meet the Fockers or a gangster movie, he's always great.

What's the nicest place you've ever visited?

I've been to New Zealand three times, and it's a great place to visit. It's quite a journey, but if you get the opportunity to go then don't turn it down.

If you could throw a dinner party for some guests from any period in time, dead or alive, who would they be?

I like racing. I know John Francome very well and he would be great at a dinner party. On the same line, I don't know Clare Balding but I think she is super-intelligent and would be good to have there. Sir Alf Ramsey, because he's still the only manager who has won England anything worth talking about and finally one of my mentors and the best manager I ever had, Terry Venables. Those four would make an interesting party.

What would you cook for them?

My one forte whenever I get in the kitchen and cook for the family is fillet steak with all the trimmings. If someone didn't like that then they would have to make do with a Dover Sole.

What is your favourite sport apart from football?

There's two that I can't split: Golf and racing. I still speak to Michael Owen on a regular basis and we always talk about it. I love a game of golf. I'm not as good as I want to be, but there are always enough good shots to make you go back the next day.

Are you looking forward to the Olympics, and have you got tickets?

My daughter applied for tickets for the three-day eventing at Greenwich Park, so we're going to a few days of that. Everyone in Britain should be looking forward to the Olympics, because I think it is such an honour to be chosen to host it.
