The 40-year-old, who made more than 350 appearances in two stints at Deepdale, brought the curtain down on a 21-year playing career last month and is keen to begin his coaching career with the League One side.
Alexander has already tasted life in the boot room, having acted as joint-caretaker manager alongside David Unsworth prior to Graham Westley's arrival in January.
He is due to hold talks with Preston chairman Peter Ridsdale and hopes a position opens up for him.
He told the Lancashire Evening Post: "The chairman says we will speak soon so hopefully something can get sorted out.
"I'm at that stage where it still sounds a little bit strange when people talk about me being retired, but it's something which all footballers have to go through, and I'm just looking towards the next challenge."
