Referee's nightmare 12 seconds at Everton

Referee Mike Jones has come under fire today for some controversial calls in the 2-2 Premier League draw between Everton and Newcastle United.

Everton manager David Moyes was left frustrated after two goals which should have stood were chalked off – one for offside, one because nobody spotted that the ball had crossed the line.

But as we pick up the action in our clip from the incident, Moyes’ men were also handed a reprieve just 12 seconds after Victor Anichebe’s header did not stand.

With play continuing, Newcastle broke forward at pace, with Hatem Ben Arfa having reached the halfway line.

Stephen Pienaar makes a crass attempt to bring him down, but Ben Arfa breaks free regardless and looks to be sweeping clear through towards the goal, only for referee Jones to bring play back.

Clearly in isolation Jones would have been better playing advantage, but would that only have compounded the damage had Everton been both denied a deserved goal and then been beaten at the other end.

Do you have sympathy for Jones? Did those two wrong calls just about make a right?
