West Brom are continuing their search for a new left-back and are holding talks with Dynamo Kiev's Goran Popov, Press Association Sport understands.
Macedonia international Popov, 27, is now the leading contender to provide competition for Liam Ridgewell. He had previously been monitored by the Baggies when with Dutch side Heerenveen before moving to Kiev two years ago.
Albion boss Steve Clarke has moved for Popov after losing out to Everton in the battle to sign Bryan Oviedo from FC Copenhagen. Blackburn's Martin Olsson was also a target but Albion could not agree a fee with the Championship club.
Popov has represented his country on more than 40 occasions and had previously played for AEK Athens and Red Star Belgrade.
Meanwhile, Clarke praised the professionalism of defender Jonas Olsson who looks set to stay at the Hawthorns even though he has still to agree a new contract.
Olsson, linked with a move to Tottenham earlier in the summer, has entered the final year of his current deal.
Clarke said: "I've got absolutely no worries about Jonas if he chooses to run his contract down.
"I've no worries about him performing for Albion week in, week out - absolutely none. He can choose to sign a new contract, which we will offer him, or he can run his contract down.
"That's his entitlement. That's the position he's put himself in and we respect that and I think he respects our stance as well."
