Baseball-Highlights of Saturday's MLB games

(Adds more games) Aug 22 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Major League Baseball games on Friday: - - - - Pirates 3, Giants 2 Starling Marte's two-out home run in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday. Marte hit the first pitch from reliever George Kontos into the left-field bleachers for his 15th home run of the season and second walk-off homer of his career. The left fielder had two of the Pirates' four hits and extended his hitting streak to seven games. - - Cubs 9, Braves 7 Miguel Montero and Jorge Soler hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning to propel Chicago past Atlanta. Nick Swisher homered twice -- from both sides of the plate -- for the Braves, who have lost six straight and 21 of 29. - - Padres 8, Cardinals 0 Matt Kemp and Justin Upton each had a two-run hit in a seven-run seventh inning and Ian Kennedy pitched six shutout innings as San Diego defeated St. Louis. The win was the Padres' fifth straight and ninth in the last 11 games, moving them to one game of .500 for the first time since they were 32-33 on June 14 -- the day before Bud Black was fired as manager. - - Yankees 6, Indians 2 Luis Severino pitched six innings for his first career win and Brett Gardner and Brian McCann hit home runs in the first inning as New York defeated Cleveland. In his fourth career start, Severino gave up a one-out home run to Francisco Lindor in the first and two other hits. Severino went six innings for the third straight start. - - Astros 3, Dodgers 1 Scott Kazmir snapped a three-start losing skid as Houston made the most of their three hits in win over Los Angeles. Houston continued its torrid play at home, extending its streak to 12 series either won (10) or split (two). The Dodgers will attempt to avert the sweep with Clayton Kershaw on the mound in the finale on Sunday. - - Rangers 5, Tigers 3 Yovanni Gallardo pitched six-plus innings of eight-hit shut ball and Texas scored four runs in the third inning en route to a win over Detroit, which averted its second straight shutout loss when Ian Kinsler hit a three-run home run with two out in the ninth. - - Nationals 6, Brewers 1 Joe Ross won the battle of rookie starters and Anthony Rendon had a double and homer as the Washington beat Milwaukee. The Nationals, who began the day five games back of the first-place New York Mets, won for just the third time in 11 games. - - Phillies 4, Marlins 2 Aaron Altherr and Darin Ruf hit consecutive homers in the ninth inning as the Philadelphia rallied to beat Miami. The Phillies (49-74) have the worst record in the majors but are just one game behind the Marlins (50-73) in the National League East. - - Twins 3, Orioles 2 Byron Buxton picked a good time to get his first major-league RBI, lining a tiebreaking single to left with two outs in the seventh inning that gave Minnesota the win over Baltimore. The Twins have won the first three games of this four-game series and are 6-0 vs. the Orioles this season. - - Mets 14, Rockies 9 For the second straight game, New York tore into Colorado's starting pitching. The victory enabled the Mets, who are 13-6 this month, to maintain their five-game lead over Washington in the National League East. The Rockies have lost 10 of their past 12 games, leaving them 6-14 this month. - - Diamondbacks 11, Reds 7 Paul Goldschmidt hit a pair of two-run homers and Ender Inciarte added a solo shot on the game's first pitch, lifting Arizona to the win. - - White Sox 6, Mariners 3 (10) The Chicago White Sox used some late-inning offensive fireworks for the second game in a row, scoring five runs in the ninth and 10th innings to beat the Seattle Mariners 6-3. - - Blue Jays 15, Angels 3 Third baseman Josh Donaldson drove in six runs to become the first major-leaguer to amass 100 RBIs this season while leading the Toronto Blue Jays' 15-3 rout of the Los Angeles Angels in front of 42,578 at Angel Stadium. The Blue Jays (68-55) used their fourth win in five games and their 18th in 22 to remain half a game behind the first-place New York Yankees in the American League East. - - Rays 5, Athletics 4 Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera hit a solo home run in the seventh inning and a two-run double in the top of the ninth as the Tampa Bay Rays rallied for a 5-4 victory against the Oakland A's at O.co Coliseum. - - Royals 6, Red Sox 3 Salvador Perez hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning and Yordano Ventura tossed six quality innings to cool off the Boston Red Sox's hot bats as the Kansas City Royals ended a two-game skid with a 6-3 win at Fenway Park. - - - - (Compiled by Amlan Chakraborty)
