Baz and Guintoli win at Silverstone

Loris Baz of Kawasaki won a chaotic opening World Superbike race in the wet at Silverstone.

It was Frenchman Baz's maiden win in the class, while Italians Michael Fabrizio and Andrea Badovini of BMW Motorrad Italia completed the podium

The start was halted due to two separate crashes then the restart was declared a wet race, despite many sections of the circuit appearing to be dry.

There was light rain on occasion which saw the lead change hands many times before it became constant and heavier late in the 18-lap race.

Baz won by 0.3 seconds before crashing immediately, while home rider Jonathan Rea of Honda also crashed into Badovini after crossing the line for fourth.

Championship leader Max Biaggi crashed late on to retire from the race while Marco Melandri and Tom Sykes, second and third in the standings, finished seventh and eighth.

In race two the retuning Sylvain Guintoli took the spoils in a truncated race worth half the points. The Frenchman, now riding for PATA Ducati, took an early lead and held his nerve as the conditions deteriorated.

The red flag came out on lap 10 of 17, and the results back-counted two laps. That meant that Baz, who had just crashed, kept his second place, with Smrz placing third.
