Another seed who crashed out was 15th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber who lost two tie-breaks in a 7-6(7) 7-6(3) defeat to Brian Baker. The reward for the American is a second-round contest with Australian youngster Bernard Tomic.
One seed who did make it through, despite a scare, was the 12th-seeded Marin Cilic who battled past Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3 4-6 6-4.
In the late match, Australian veteran Lleyton Hewitt posted a regulation 6-4 6-4 win over Russia's Mikhail Youzhny to set up a clash with Serb Viktor Troicki, who earlier beat Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-4 7-5.
Jesse Levine won an all-American battle with Donald Young 6-4 7-6(2) while Stanislas Wawrinka also progressed, thanks to a 6-2 3-6 6-1 win over Paul-Henri Mathieu.
Denis Istomin, Lu Yen-Hsun, Pablo Andujar and Andreas Seppi were also victorious in their first-round encounters.
The top eight seeds in the tournament, including Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, have all received byes into the second round.
Murray, the number three seed, is the defending champion and will play either Sam Querrey or Jurgen Melzer in the second round.
Home favourites Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish enter the fray on Tuesday, with Tomas Berdych also slated to kick off his campaign on the same day.
