Villa host Manchester City on Monday night in the knowledge that a win or draw for their young team will take the club out of the relegation zone with 10 games remaining of the Barclays Premier League season.
Following his arrival from Norwich last summer, Lambert introduced a clear policy of reducing the age of the squad with players such as Ashley Westwood, Christian Benteke and Matthew Lowton given prominent roles in the starting XI.
That has meant that more established names such as Darren Bent and Stephen Ireland have featured less this season. Lambert says that his decisions are based on what he thinks is best for the club as they continue their fight against the drop.
He told Yahoo!-Eurosport: "We bring in young players, and you know they haven't got the fear or pressure of it initially, until they get older and they think, 'this is what I am really involved in'.
"So I don't have a problem playing young players at all. I think if you are good enough, then I will throw you in, and I don't have a problem with that whatsoever.
"Regarding leaving an older player out, that's tough. Especially a seasoned one who has played 100, 200 games, that's when it becomes a bit tougher.
"But that's when you have to make a decision that you think is right for the football club. You are hoping that the experienced lad you leave out is a good professional and understands why you are doing it.
"I also try and tell the experienced ones beforehand that I am going to do it, so it is not a shock to the system when you read out the team."
