Kubica won the first eight stages of the ERC Rally Islas Canarias and was leading by more than one minute when he crashed his Citroën DS3 RRC into retirement in a spectacular smash that almost sent him plunging down a cliff.
Afterwards his key rivals - including Jan Kopecký, who went on to win the event – and runner-up Craig Breen both lauded the former F1 ace's efforts.
Kopecký, who has been friends with Kubica since 2006, said: “He’s a legend in all motorsports and is a very great driver, always working hard and always pushing. It’s fantastic to have him here.”
Breen, meanwhile, said: “He’s left a massive mark on everyone in Gran Canaria. The buzz this weekend was absolutely incredible and his speed straight out of the box was pretty amazing. It bodes very well for his career but also the next round of the ERC.”
Kubica will be back on ERC duty on SATA Rallye Açores from 25-27 April. The event will be shown live on British Eurosport.
