The world number five, runner-up in last year's event in Sweden, will now face Bulgaria's Gregor Dimitrov courtesy of his win over the two-time champion.
Dimtrov reached the last four after beating Albert Ramos 7-6 6-3 in the clay of the Bastad Tennis Stadium.
In the other half of the draw Jan Hajek will face Nicolas Almagro in their semi-final.
Czech Hajek came through his quarter-final against Estonia's Jurgen Zopp 6-3 4-6 6-3, while Almagro won another all-Spanish clash 7-6 4-6 6-3 against Daniel Gimeno.
