Seagulls substitute Ashley Barnes came closest to grabbing an unlikely winner 10 minutes from the end when he met Stephen Ward's low cross, only to be denied by a combination of Alex McCarthy and the near post.
"It was reckless challenge, Leo's not malicious but he didn't give the referee an option," admitted Jones.
"In today's football it's a straight red and with their player having just gone, the crowd up and their players rushing in it's going to be a red.
"Beforehand a point here seems a decent result but after the game we are disappointed not to take three points."
