Inverness had scored in their previous 25 games this season and last failed to find the net in a draw against Dunfermline in May, which secured their SPL status.
That prompted Butcher to claim on the eve of the game that a goalless draw would send "seismic shock waves" across the Clydesdale Bank Premier League, but he was happy to see his side stay in second place and stretch their unbeaten run to nine matches.
Butcher said: "It's a good point for us really. Nil-nil is a thing we don't do very often. I said there would be a seismic shock if it happened - I'm never going to say that again.
"It keeps us in second and after 26 matches there are only two teams that have beaten us, Motherwell twice. That's incredible in itself.
"If you had said that in July I would have said 'no chance'. This is all beyond our wildest dreams."
Butcher added: "We started the game really well with a couple of chances and I thought we were going to nick it in the end.
"But having said that they have had chances in the second half, and Antonio (Reguero) made a really good save from Gregory Tade, so we could have lost it."
St Johnstone manager Steve Lomas said: "I thought it was set up to be two attacking teams and it probably turned out to be a little bit of an anti-climax.
"Inverness had a couple early and then I thought it became pretty even Stevens. In these tight games when you get your chances you have got to take them."
