Boro drew themselves level 20 minutes later when Ben Gibson headed in from a corner.
Robins said: "We started quite brightly, I thought we took a foothold in the game, we passed it okay until the final pass, which meant that we were chasing more than we would have liked.
"We didn't create a massive amount but we were huffing and puffing, I thought in the first half it was an even contest.
"They came back into it towards the end of the half and then tried to take command early in the second.
"We needed to change it and the introduction of Danny Ward (from the bench) was a real turning point in terms of the possession and the direction of the game. We got a goal and then the game was nip and tuck for the rest of the evening.
"It was a close-fought contest. They're a good side, no doubt about that. They've thrown the kitchen sink at us and we've conceded a poor goal from a set-play. Had we defended, we could have picked up three points at a place we lost 4-1 last year."
