Hawley signed a short-term deal at Glanford Park in the summer, but it runs out in January and Laws his keen to extend it.
The Iron boss told the club's official website: "We have to spin plates and work out what's going to benefit the football club.
"I will certainly be talking to Karl shortly and I have explained that to him."
The former Carlisle and Preston man, 31, has scored four goals in 16 appearances, and Laws added: "We will talk about the longer-term issues and that is something we want to progress if we can.
"We know there's some talking to do."
