The summer signing from Cardiff made his league debut for the club in the 1-1 draw with Colchester on Saturday and head coach Sean O'Driscoll revealed he gave the 23-year-old the nod over Frank Fielding because of his 'calming influence' over what is an inexperienced City squad.
And Parish revealed that demeanour that won him a place in the side had been drilled into him by his father.
"My Dad has always been on at me to try and be calm on the pitch," he told the Bristol Evening Post.
"He used to tell me 'it's a game of football, don't get carried away'.
"I'm naturally quite a calm sort of person and I try to be that way on the pitch. I think it helps those playing in front of me.
"You don't want people to be frantic, because you need to think clearly if you are going to make the right decisions under pressure.
"The situation here is already difficult enough without us being hectic in the way we play."
