Pitman's late penalty sealed a routine victory to extend Bournemouth's unbeaten run to 14 games.
It was the first time Pitman had found the net since his loan move from Bristol City and Howe said: "It was really pleasing to see Brett Pitman on the scoresheet.
"There was a discussion between him and our regular penalty taker Charlie Daniels as to who was going to take the penalty, but Brett needed a goal and he thumped it home.
"You've got to remember he's not played that much football, certainly until he came back here. He's had a few chances again and him getting off the mark is a real positive."
Bournemouth took the lead through Lewis Grabban's seventh goal in as many games 13 minutes before half time.
Grabban's fine goalscoring form has been a major factor in Bournemouth's success since manager Howe returned to the south-coast club.
The striker troubled the Yeovil defence with his pace throughout and his clinical move down the left with Marc Pugh set up a richly-deserved ninth goal of the season.
Bournemouth had several opportunities to improve on Grabban's first-half goal before Harry Arter doubled the lead when he drilled a fierce 73rd minute left-footed shot into Yeovil goalkeeper Marek Stech's top corner.
Pitman wrapped things up from the spot after Yeovil defender Luke Ayling had handled.
