Arsenal had led through Theo Walcott’s somewhat fortunate first half goal but the introduction of Wesley Sneijder and Drogba at half time changed the game, with the Ivorian taking advantage of slack defending and a dubious penalty call to claim victory and net his 15th goal in 16 games against the North London club.
And Sanogo was was afforded a glorious opportunity to open the scoring within the first minute, when a mistake by Felipe Melo conceded possession to the French youngster on the edge of the box. However he saw his shot smothered by Muslera.
Walcott came close to doubling Arsenal’s lead after being released through on goal by Aaron Ramsey, but the England winger lobbed his effort just wide of the target.
Ramsey continued to impress throughout a slow natured affair but couldn’t find the pass to break down the opposition defence, with Sanogo unable to provide the finishing touch in attack.
But Arsenal finally found the breakthrough after 38 minutes, when Walcott’s deep cross into the box from the left wing drifted into the Galatasaray’s net following Melo mistimed attempted header.
Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim introduced Sneijder and Drogba after the break and both players instantly altered the tempo of the contest, giving the Turkish champions a platform in attack.
However it took the visitors until the 76th minute to restore parity, when Drogba was awarded a spot kick after being fouled by Ignasi Miquel in the area, despite appearing to manufacture the contact.
The former Chelsea attacker made no mistake from 12 yards, waiting for Wojciech Szczesny to make his move before powering the ball into the net.
Sneijder and Drogba continued to link up, causing the Arsenal backline problems, but with Wenger waving his side forward on the counter attack Per Mertesacker came close to restoring his side’s lead but directed his header from 12 yards over the bar.
But it was Galatasaray who found the decisive blow when Drogba latched on to Sneijder’s weighted through ball, taking the ball on to his left foot before smashing a shot high into the Arsenal net with just minutes left to play.
