No feminine podium this year in the Global Champions tour’s leg. But the British, the Americans, and notably the American lady rider Beezie Madden with Simon were there.
The first round drawn by the Italian maestro Uliano Vezzani put many of the favourite riders in trouble on quite a number of occasions, and even generated some fear. Sabrina stumbled in the water jump, sending the German champion Marcus Ehning to the ground.
Lame when she came out of the showground, the mare finally suffers only from a few bruises.
A lesser-known German rider, meanwhile, has been the star of the day in the form of Dreher.
Although Magnus Romeo is not an easy horse, since his character can even push him to refuse a fence, Dreher, who reached the highest level only last year aged 39, was able to take all the risks to beat the Olympic team champion in the race against the clock between the only four couples who managed to clear after two rounds at 1.60 m :
"Usually his problem is the last fence, but today, I approached it so fast that he had no time to think about it," said Dreher.
There were more surprises at the EADS Grand Prix. If his last round was penalised by a rail as early as the second fence, Egyptian El Zoghby stepping on the podium in third place, in front of a glamorous public with Splendor - a horse he had borrowed from one of his students - made for a tremendous show for the 6,000 spectators, as well as television viewers.
