Hearts will be the subject of a meeting of UEFA's control and disciplinary body on Thursday after their fans encroached on to the pitch during the Europa League clash with Liverpool at Anfield.
Supporters from the away end spilled on to the playing surface when David Templeton scored in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool on August 30.
The 84th-minute goal levelled the tie on aggregate, but Luis Suarez then struck as Hearts exited the competition.
A UEFA statement read: "UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Heart of Midlothian FC for 'field invasions by supporters' at last month's UEFA Europa League play-off second-leg match between Liverpool FC and the Scottish club.
"The case will be heard by the UEFA control and disciplinary body on Thursday, September 20."
