Moves to Britain as apprentice for trainer Luca Cumani in 1985 and became stable jockey soon after. Rides his first British winner at Goodwood in 1987 and three years later becomes the first teenager since Lester Piggott to ride 100 winners in a season. Enjoys first Group One success in 1990 when winning the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Markofdistinction at Ascot.
Given a police caution following arrest in 1993 after being caught with a small amount of cocaine in his pocket in London on a night out while celebrating Arsenal's League Cup final win over Sheffield Wednesday.
Later that year he becomes retained stable jockey for Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin operation.
Crowned champion jockey for the first time in 1994 after riding 233 winners. Retains the title a year later with 216 victories.
