HOT FOOTBALL TRANSER GOSSIP: Chelsea want Berahino, Higuain, Griezmann, Sneijder and more

You get the sense that Roman Abramovich is looking forward to January. Having resisted his natural impulse to fire Jose Mourinho in retaliation for a string of iffy results, it appears that Chelsea’s owner will instead content himself with a wild and extravagant session of retail therapy as soon as he is humanly able. There are so many players being linked with a January move to Stamford Bridge in today’s papers that one wonders whether Abramovich’s latest masterplan is to simply buy up all the world’s footballers, one by one.

He’ll be starting with Saido Berahino, according to the Telegraph, which says the West Brom striker has been added to Chelsea’s shortlist of strikers to replace Radamel Falcao, who the Blues will allow to leave in January because he is rubbish. Abramovich is reportedly considering a £20m bid for Berahino, who may get upset if Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace doesn’t accept it. Other names the Telegraph says are on Abramovich’s striker shortlist are Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani, Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain and Alexandre Lacazette of Lyon.

But there are others too, according to the Express, which says the Blues are also keen on Marseille forward Michy Batshuayi, although they would have to pay £35m to get him. Another potential snag is that “all the world’s top 15 clubs” apparently want the Belgian, although the only one mentioned by name is Valencia. The Express adds that Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid and Marseille defender Nicolas Nkoulou are also on Chelsea’s radar. That’s seven players linked with the Blues so far, if you’ve lost count.

Speaking of Valencia, Chelsea want to buy one of their players too, according to our Spanish friends at Fichajes. The club’s Algerian winger Sofiane Feghouli is out of contract this season so Abramovich could - and will - snap him up for free if possible.

The Blues are also apparently “in pole position” to land 18-year-old Bologna midfielder Amadou Diawara, whose agent has reached an agreement with “another agent close to Abramovich”, claims the Metro. The paper then admits “it’s not made clear what the nature of the agreement is”. So for all we know, they could have just made an agreement to go for a pint, or watch all five seasons of Breaking Bad together while eating crisps.

If you think there can’t possibly be any more players linked with Chelsea today, you think wrong. The final, and most intriguing, name on the list is formerly brilliant Dutchman Wesley Sneijder, who Turkish media say the Blues could snare from Galatasaray in January by paying his release clause of £14m. The fact that Sneijder signed a new contract last month, or that he is no longer brilliant, seems unimportant.

And don’t worry if that sounds like too many players for Abramovich to fit in his squad. He can always just sent them out on loan.

Finally, in some non-Chelsea gossip, Liverpool have made an offer for Lazio’s Argentine midfielder Lucas Biglia, Bournemouth are set to make a £3m bid for Hull defender Curtis Davies, Arsenal’s Joel Campbell is wanted by Turkey’s two biggest clubs and Joe Cole’s loan at Coventry is set to be extended. Even that gossip is a bit Chelsea related.
