Captain Alex Ovechkin scored in the second round for the lone goal of the shootout and defenseman Mike Green tallied in regulation as Washington edged visiting New York.
Ovechkin went to his backhand and flipped the puck under the crossbar to beat Evgeni Nabokov.
Braden Holtby stopped the next two chances to clinch the victory after making 35 saves for the Capitals, who moved into first place in the Southeast Division.

Former Toronto enforcer Jay Rosehill scored the game-winner and helped knock Joffrey Lupul out of the game as visiting Philadelphia avoided a series sweep by the Maple Leafs.
Brayden Schenn, Luke Schenn, Simon Gagne and Jakub Voracek also scored for the Flyers, who got 25 saves from Ilya Bryzgalov in his 21st consecutive start.
Sean Couturier had two assists to extend his point streak to four games (five points) as Philadelphia won its season-high fourth consecutive game.

Ben Bishop turned aside 45 shots in his Tampa Bay debut and Martin St. Louis recorded a goal and two assists as the visiting Lightning rolled over Carolina.
Benoit Pouliot registered a goal and an assist while Teddy Purcell, Tom Pyatt and defenseman Keith Aulie also scored as the Lightning won for the seventh time in the last eight trips to Carolina.
Bishop, acquired from Ottawa on Wednesday, earned his second shutout of the season and tied Daren Puppa's franchise record for saves in a shutout.

Jaromir Jagr scored in his debut with his new team and Tuukka Rask turned aside 40 shots for his 14th career shutout as host Boston defeated New Jersey for the 10th time in 11 outings.
Brad Marchand and captain Zdeno Chara notched assists for the Bruins, who won their third straight overall to remain one point behind Montreal in the Northeast Division.
Martin Brodeur made 25 saves for the Devils, who dropped into ninth place after the New York Islanders ventured past regulation against Washington on Thursday.

Marian Gaborik made an immediate impact for his new team with a goal and an assist and Sergei Bobrovsky turned aside 38 shots as visiting Columbus topped Nashville to earn its third straight win.
Matt Calvert also recorded a goal and an assist and defenseman James Wisniewski scored on the power play for the Blue Jackets.
Blue-liner Kevin Klein tallied and Pekka Rinne made 35 saves as the Predators failed to earn a point for the second time in eight games. Nashville remained at 38 points, one behind the Edmonton Oilers and Blue Jackets.

Michael Ryder collected two goals and an assist and Peter Budaj turned aside 33 shots as host Montreal improved to 11-0-0 against Southeast Division representatives.
Captain Brian Gionta scored and set up a goal and rookie Alex Galchenyuk also tallied for the Northeast Division-leading Canadiens, who have won four of their last five and maintained their one-point lead over Boston.
Alex Burmistrov scored and Ondrej Pavelec finished with 20 saves for the Jets, who have dropped a season-high five in a row and seven of nine to fall out of first place in the Southeast.

Adam Cracknell scored twice in regulation and defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk netted the decisive goal in the sixth round of the shootout as St. Louis snapped its eight-game losing streak at the United Center.
Captain David Backes scored a third-period goal, Chris Porter notched two assists and Brian Elliott made 33 saves for the Blues.
Captain Jonathan Toews recorded a goal and an assist, rookie Brandon Saad and Viktor Stalberg also scored and Corey Crawford stopped 19 shots for the Blackhawks, who increased their lead over idle Pittsburgh in the race for the Presidents' Trophy to two points.
