England face fierce rivals Germany at Wembley on Tuesday, and it appears that the Chelsea midfielder is attempting to stoke the fires ahead of the clash.
The hopes of England’s World Cup chances are pinned on the Manchester United striker but Schuerrle believes Rooney would not be good enough to feature in the heavily talented German side.
“Rooney is a great player, but we have good quality, too, in every position, and maybe twice, so I don’t know if he would play,” Schuerrle said.
Germany coach Joachim Loew also chipped in with his thoughts ahead of Tuesday’s friendly, alluding to the fact that England have a number of impressive youngsters.
Loew said: “England is a great football nation. They can choose great players. There are many names I could name, talented young players I would like to select, but I prefer not to name individuals.
"They have in Roy Hodgson an excellent teacher of tactics, a great coach. Yeah, they have a great team, that’s for sure.”
Schuerrle later took to Twitter to clarify the comments he made to the press.
