Montpellier took an early lead through the lively Remy Cabella, who finished well from a tight angle.
Maxwell levelled for PSG on the hour, prodding in from close range from Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s knockdown.
Montpellier were reduced to 10 men when Abdelhamid El Kaoutari saw red but PSG could not take full advantage and had to settle for a point.
PSG are hot favourites to retain their Ligue 1 crown, but there was no place in the starting line-up for the man they paid £55 million for.

Despite all the star names on show for PSG, Montpellier’s Cabella was the player that caught the eye – and he deserved his goal when it came in the 10th minute.
Latching onto a loose ball after Montpellier had seen a shot charged down, Cabella kept his head to lift the ball over PSG keeper Salvatore Sirigu from a tight angle to score the first goal of the new season.
Both sides were restricted to half chances for the rest of the first half as PSG struggled to impose themselves on their well-drilled opponents.
But PSG were more dominant after the break and deserved their equaliser when it came just after the hour courtesy of an unlikely source – left-back Maxwell.
Javier Pastore started the move with a delicate lofted pass over the Montpellier defence that Ibrahimovic nodded to the far post for Maxwell to prod into the roof of the net from close range.
PSG coach Blanc finally unleashed Cavani with 17 minutes to play and he could have marked his first appearance in PSG colours with a headed goal, but Joris Marveaux made a vital block to deny the Uruguayan.
Montpellier were reduced to 10 men when El Kaoutari received two bookings in quick succession and PSG dominated the final stages as they pushed for a winner. But Montpellier held firm to secure an excellent point and deny Blanc’s side an opening-day victory.
