Malignaggi beats Senchenko

Paulie Malignaggi became WBA welterweight champion by stopping previously undefeated Ukrainian Vyacheslav Senchenko in the ninth round in Donetsk - and even managed to tweet during the fight.

The referee stepped in to declare Malignaggi (pictured left) the winner after he battered Senchenko so badly that the deposed champion was unable to open one of his eyes.

Senchenko struggled with the New Yorker's speed from the start as he moved in and out, delivering rapid punches while avoiding his bigger but slower opponent.

"This victory was very emotional! Its been a long road in the life of Malignaggi. Ups and downs in life but thats what makes champions!" the victor tweeted after the fight.

Greater attention was given to the fight as Malignaggi had said he would tweet from the ring - and he was as good as his word.

Alongside an accompanying pre-fight photo, he tweeted "In the ring", before asking fans "How am I looking?????" and also stating "If I get robbed" between rounds.

When he was announced as the new champion, he added via the social networking site "And new!!!!!!!!!" before adding "I did it!!!!", "LOOOK AT MY BELT!!!!!!!!!" and "2 weight champ!!!!!!!!"

He said he would not be repeating the stunt, "I told everyone I was going to tweet during rounds. I think I only tweeted twice but that s*** was hard and wont do it again," before adding "I lied My next fight i'll be tweeting again hahahha".

Whether he does so or not, fans backed his decision to do so in this fight, with Cody Blackburn echoing many in tweeting: "@PaulMalignaggi you really are something else tweeting in between rounds an still getting the KO #TK #classact #worldchamp simple!"

Malignaggi had plenty of praise for his opponent.

"I don't want people 2 think I took Sechenko lightly because I said I was going to tweet during my fight. He was a great champ. Great fighter," he added.

But his experience was best summed up by the following tweet: "I TOLD EVERYONE I WAS GONNA MAKE HISTORY IN MORE WAYS THEN ONE!!!!! NEW CHAMP AND TWITTER KING!!!!!!!!!"
