Lightweight Maxwell won his second straight bout at the European Olympic boxing qualifiers in Turkey, defeating Moldova's Piotr Apostol 20-10 to follow up on his win over former world and European champion Albert Selimov 48 hours earlier.
Twelve months ago the 22-year old was not even on the radar of British team officials, with at least five other fighters ahead of him in the selection race.
But his win at the British Championships last November established his credentials and he will now face home favourite and world number five Fatih Keles in the quarter-finals, knowing just two more wins would secure the Olympic qualifying standard.
However, Maxwell's Team GB place would still not be guaranteed if British rival Josh Taylor continues his progress in Trabzon.
Scot Taylor is on the other side of the draw and wouldn't face Maxwell until the final, which would be a straight box-off for a Team GB place.
Taylor, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist in Delhi, beat Latvia's Artjom Ramlavs 14-4 to progress to a last eight bout with Armenia's Vladimir Sarukhanyan.
