Neil Magny Steps in to Save UFC Fight Night 78 Main Event

Neil Magny Sends Johny Hendricks Packing at Welterweight (UFC 207 Results)

The hardest working man in MMA, or at least one of them, has agreed to step up and save the UFC Fight Night 78 main event.

After Matt Brown had to withdraw due to injury on Monday, it took less than 24 hours for Neil Magny to step in to keep Kelvin Gastelum in the UFC Fight Night 78 main event on Nov. 21 in Monterrey, Mexico.

Magny (16-4) fought five times in 2014 and has already fought four times in 2015. The bout with Gastelum will be his fifth trip to the Octagon this year.

Mangy's last bout, a victory over Erick Silva, was three weeks separated from a loss to Demian Maia, his lone defeat in his last nine bouts. Much like Donald Cerrone at lightweight, Magny has become the UFC's go-to guy when they need a 170-pounder to step up on short notice.

Gastelum had been hoping to use the fight with Brown to springboard his return to the welterweight division. After missing weight by 10 pounds and then losing to Tyron Woodley in what was supposed to be a 170-pound bout, Gastelum had no choice but to take his next fight at middleweight.

He then scored a TKO stoppage of former King of Pancrase and Strikeforce champion Nate Marquardt before the UFC allowed him to return to welterweight, where he will now face Magny on short notice.

Other high profile UFC Fight Night 78 bouts include Diego Sanchez making his featherweight debut against No. 4 ranked Ricardo Lamas and Olympic Gold Medalist Henry Cejudo facing No. 3 ranked Jussier Formiga in a pivotal flyweight bout, so the UFC has some options if they feel the need to elevate one of those bouts to main event status.
