Paper Round: Doc ran from crowd to help Muamba

The Sun and the Daily Star lead their front pages with the words of Shauna Muamba, Fabrice's fiancee, via Twitter: "God is in control. Please keep @fmuamba in ur prayers."

The Daily Mirror leads with the news that the player's heart apparently stopped for two hours, during which time the Bolton star was kept alive by artificial intervention, administered from the moment the medics arrived on the scene.

And a report in the Daily Express reveals that Muamba had the highest standard of care right from the outset. In the crowd at White Hart Lane on Saturday was Dr Andrew Deaner, a consultant cardiologist at the London Chest Hospital, who raced on to the pitch to give the benefit of his advice and expertise.

Deaner apparently accompanied Muamba in the ambulance to the specialist unit at which he works, which the Express's expert claims is the best in the country: "It's better to drive past two other hospitals to get to the London Chest Hospital. Fabrice could not be in a better place."

The Daily Mirror quotes a Dr Graham Stuart of Sports Cardiology UK saying that heart checks carried out on 16- and 17-year-old footballers in Britain generally pick up congenital heart defects.

Another expert, Dr Jonathan Hill of King's College Hospital, explained to the same paper that the player was "just unlucky", since "you can develop a problem with the heart out of the blue".

The Daily Telegraph's report quotes another cardiologist - speaking on condition of anonymity - who agrees that the current screening is limited in its effectiveness: "There is some evidence that these conditions may not be apparent when a player is 17 but may become apparent later... If you have a normal echocardiogram at 17 or 18, it doesn't mean you will in three years' time, if you have the wrong gene."

On the back pages, The Sun and the Daily Mirror report that Bolton's devastated squad may now pull out of the FA Cup rather than face the prospect of a traumatic return to White Hart Lane.

In the day's other news, The Sun reports that Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini and his number two David Platt flew to France to watch Lille star Eden Hazard at the weekend, increasing the chances that the club will make a bid to sign the £35m-rated playmaker.

The Times and The Sun report that Luis Suarez is to stay at Liverpool despite the controversy that has dogged his season. "Despite everything that happened, I'm happy here - on and off the pitch," the player said, adding that Anfield chiefs have already started talking to him about extending his contract beyond its current 2016 expiry date.

The Daily Mail reports that Bayern Munich will offer Arjen Robben a huge new pay deal to persuade him not to join Chelsea or Manchester City.

Elsewhere, Ajax's Jan Vertonghen has apparently told Arsenal he wants to join them in the Summer (The Sun), Jurgen Klinsmann has rubbished talk that he will replace Harry Redknapp as Tottenham manager in the summer (Daily Mirror), and Chelsea are looking at non-league star OlliePalmer, of Blue Square South side Havant and Waterlooville.
