Mario Balotelli's brace saw the Azzurri win 2-1 in Warsaw and extend their unbeaten run against Germany in competitive games to eight matches.
Few pundits had Italy pegged as serious contenders before the tournament started. After they finished bottom of a World Cup group also featuring Paraguay, Slovakia and New Zealand in 2010, Cesare Prandelli was brought in to overhaul the national team.
His job appeared to be very much a work in progress when, after qualifying for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine, they lost all three of their subsequent friendlies against Uruguay, USA and Russia without scoring a goal.
However, they opened up their Group C campaign with a well-deserved 1-1 draw against defending champions Spain, who they will now meet in Sunday's final. Italy have never lost to Spain in seven meetings at major finals.
So today's poll question is simply: Who will win Euro 2012?
