FA Cup winners in 2008 and finalists in 2010, Portsmouth have had a financially-troubled few years which have led to two relegations in the last three seasons but are close to coming out of administration in time for the new campaign.
And they begin life in the third tier with a local derby as Bournemouth, who almost reached the Championship in 2011 in their first season up in League One, make the short trip on the weekend of August 18.
Coventry City and Doncaster Rovers, who joined Portsmouth in the bottom three at the end of 2011-12, begin with away games at Yeovil Town and Walsall respectively.
Elsewhere on opening weekend, Sheffield United begin their second season in the division with a home tie against newly-promoted Shrewsbury Town.
The Blades were pipped to play-off success by Huddersfield after their quest for automatic promotion at the first attempt was derailed by star striker Ched Evans being found guilty of rape.
Three other newly-promoted sides will be in action with Paolo di Canio taking League Two champions Swindon Town to Hartlepool United, Crawley Town playing host to Scunthorpe United and play-off winners Crewe Alexandra also getting underway at home to Notts County.
