Each side were without their top scorers, with Robbie Brady and Christian Benteke missing for Hull and Villa respectively. And their absences were sorely felt in an uninspiring game that was desperately short of attacking quality at each end.
Villa crafted the best two chances of the match, one in each half for Gabriel Agbonlahor. The first saw the striker skip past two challenges before drawing a fine one-handed save out of Allan McGregor.
The second came soon after the restart and really should have led to a Villa goal. Leandro Bacuna instigated a counter-attack down the right wing and found Andreas Weimann, whose cut back ran through to Agbonlahor – but the striker sent his shot whistling past the post.
PRE-MATCH: Each side are missing their top scorer. Hull are without Robbie Brady, who has undergone a hernia operation, while Villa are missing Christian Benteke.
19' - CHANCE: Agbonlahor skips past two challenges and tests McGregor with a low shot towards the bottom corner, and the keeper comes out on top with a fine one-handed stop.
53' – CHANCE: Best chance of the match! Bacuna accelerates down the right and finds Weimann, whose cut back runs through to Agbonlahor, who strikes it well but his shot whistles just past the post.
Hull possession: 45%, Aston Villa 55%.
This is only the second clean sheet Aston Villa have kept in their last 29 league games, with the other also coming away from home.
There have been just four goals scored in the four Premier League games at KC Stadium this season, three of which have been scored by Hull.
TALKING POINT: Can Aston Villa maintain their solid form? Paul Lambert has a very young side that seem to be maturing all the time. He may have expected his side to win at Hull after victories against Arsenal and Manchester City already this season, but Villa are already looking far stronger than last season.
