West Brom dominated possession, but created few chances in the first half. The rhythm of both sides was disrupted by injuries to both Adlene Guedioura and Billy Jones, and Jones was replaced by Berahino.
Berahino’s goal came just before half-time, after Stephane Sessegnon pulled a ball back for the striker to tee up with his right foot, and finish past Julian Speroni with his left.
Palace improved in the second half, and Mile Jedinak had their best chance, heading just a yard wide from a 63rd minute corner. West Brom struggled, until with 10 minutes left, Chris Brunt’s flat corner from the left was powered past Speroni by McAuley.
21' - GUEDIOURA INJURED: Adlene Guedioura, the liveliest player so far for Crystal Palace, injures his ribs and has to be replaced by Jason Puncheon.
31' - BILLY JONES INJURED: Billy Jones pulls a muscle, and is replaced by Saido Berahino.
40' - CHANCE FOR PALACE: Puncheon is in space on the left in West Brom’s box, but his shot is dragged a few yards wide
45' - BERAHINO SCORES: After Sessegnon cuts onto his right foot on the left wing and squares the ball into the box, Berahino takes one touch to control the ball, and another to send the ball into the corner.
61' - PALACE COME BACK INTO THE GAME: Puncheon outmuscles Liam Ridgewell on the left, and his shot is deflected and beaten away by Boaz Myhill.
63' - PALACE PRESSURE GROWS: Jerome Thomas takes a corner from the left, but Jedinak’s header is a yard wide.
79’ - WEST BROM FIGHT BACK: Sessegnon is set free by Morgan Amalfitano on the right, pulls the ball back for Chris Brunt, but he pulls his shot a yard wide.
82’ - GAME OVER: Chris Brunt takes a corner on the left wing and his flat corner is met by McAuley, whose header is hard, low and past Speroni.
Saido Berahino scored his sixth goal of the season.
Crystal Palace have now lost seven Premier League games in a row.
Marouane Chamakh has only scored once in his last 21 league appearances.
West Brom have lost just once in their last seven games.
Keith Millen has secured 0 points for Crystal Palace in his caretaker spell.
TALKING POINT: Can West Brom keep hold of Berahino? On just £850 a week and currently negotiating a new contract, there is every chance that a bigger club will be able to derail the talks, or simply buy him in January whatever the outcome.
