The Swansea forward has given the nod ahead of Alvaro Negredo on Friday evening as La Roja overcame the Eastern Europeans in Mallorca.
“I am very pleased and very grateful,” he told reporters after the game.
“I appreciate the confidence that the coach has given me.”
Goalscorer Negredo came of the bench to join captain Xavi on the scoresheet, and later made a heartwarming goal dedication.
“My goal is dedicated to María de Villota,” he told reporters.
“It's a sad day for all of her family and she deserves this dedication.
“I did not know her but it has been an example of overcoming.”
Negredo then commented on the fact that he was initially overlooked in the starting XI for Michu.
"I'm very happy, trying to make the most of the chances I get but the most important thing is winning."
“We all want to play, we have that excitement.
“Today he went for Michu, another day he goes with me."
