Mourinho to bid for Falcao: The Express report that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is to make a bid for Monaco striker Radamel Falcao. The Colombian only joined the French side in the summer, but reports in France suggest that Falcao is unsettled and could be seeking a move elsewhere. The Express’s John Richardson states that Fernando Torres could be included in what would be a £52 million deal. It is believed that contact has been made with Falcao’s advisers in preparation for the bid.
Paper Round’s View: Mourinho travelled to Brussels in midweek to watch the friendly between Belgium and Colombia. A host of Chelsea players were featuring for the Belgian side – including Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard, but Mourinho could well have made the trip to have a look at Falcao. Torres is enjoying a decent run of form for Chelsea this season but could be interested in earning vast sums in the tax haven.
City eye Madrid’s Ramos: Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini believes that Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos could be the answer to City’s defensive woes, according to The Mirror’s Tom Hopkinson. The Spaniard has a buyout clause of £41 million but is currently at a standstill with talks over a new contract at the Bernabeu – Real reportedly refusing to bow down to Ramos’s pay demands. It is believed the 27-year-old has stated that he would like a pay rise to match the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.
Paper Round’s View: It’s difficult to see Real Madrid allowing Ramos to leave, especially over something as minor as his wages. But if reports are to be believed and the Spanish club are refusing to meet his demands, then he could well move on to somewhere that will pay him what he wants. City would certainly be able to do just that.
Arsenal to swoop for Pato in January: According to the Express, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been told that he can sign Corinthians striker Alexandre Pato in January. Olivier Giroud has had to bear the burden of scoring goals for the Gunners so far this season and is in need of a strike partner. Colin Mafham writes: “Wenger, anxious to sign a new front man to support Olivier Giroud, tried to sign Pato, 24, last January when he was at AC Milan. But Pato chose to return home to Brazil with Corinthians, who have hinted they will allow him to move for £10million or on loan.”
Paper Round’s View: With Nicklas Bendtner Arsenal’s back-up striker, it is blatantly obvious that the Gunners desperately need some attacking reinforcements. Wenger’s side have had a magnificent start to the season but an injury to Giroud could see their title hopes dashed. Pato would certainly be a good fit but whether he can be persuaded to move to England remains to be seen.
Chelsea and City fight it out for Matuidi: Chelsea and Manchester City have been put on alert after it was revealed that Blaise Matuidi has been unable to agree a contract extension with Paris Saint-Germain. Reports in France suggest that Matuidi, who played a vital role in PSG's title-winning season last term, will be offered a new five-year deal, though the Daily Star believe that Matuidi could leave the Parc des Princes on a free transfer in the summer. Chelsea and City could take advantage of the Ligue 1 club's hesitance at offering a new deal by offering him a huge contract to play in the Premier League.
Paper Round's View: PSG would be incredibly foolish not to offer one of their more important players a new contract. But should that not happen then the French midfielder may look to further his career elsewhere. He has stated that his "first wish would be to stay, but you can wish for something and sometimes it doesn't happen."
