He won by a neck from 8-1 shot Thistle Bird, with Aljamaaheer close behind in third. Trumpet Major and Chachamaidee followed.
Eight-year-old Premio Loco, a 20-1 chance, was the oldest of the five runners.
Trainer Chris Wall said: "I was worried about the ground, but I thought the best of it was against the far rail, so [jockey] George [Baker] was under strict instructions to stick to the rail like a limpet.
"We don't normally make the running with him, but I thought it might suit him in a race like this and we could let him pick up in his own time.
"I suppose the Joel Stakes at Newmarket would be the next possible race, but he's had a long season and it wouldn't be the end of the world if this was his last run of the year."
