The winners of Euro 2008 and World Cup 2010 had a predictably straightforward run into Euro 2012.
Drawn in Group I against Czech Republic, Scotland, Lithuania and Liechtenstein, the Spaniards won eight from eight and qualified a full 11 points clear of group runners-up Czech Republic.
That form has not been repeated in friendly matches, however. Since sealing their qualification for Poland and Ukraine, Vicente del Bosque's side have lost to England 1-0 at Wembley - the last of four defeats since their World Cup triumph.
The world champions were thrashed 4-1 in Argentina, and 4-0 in Portugal in 2010, and were beaten by group rivals Italy in August.
Their pre-tournament form has been better with wins over Serbia and South Korea.
