Sweden occupied a unique place in the qualifying process as they secured a place at the finals by virtue of being the best runners up across the nine groups.
Erik Hamren's side opened with a 2-0 win over Hungary at then a 6-0 demolition of San Marino, but they were put firmly in their place by a 4-1 defeat in Netherlands that installed the Dutch as group leaders.
From that point on Sweden were always chasing the best runners up spot and their hopes of securing it suffered a blow in a 2-1 defeat away at Hungary in September 2011.
However, Sweden avoided a place in the play-offs and claimed automatic qualification with a superb 3-2 home win over Netherlands in their final qualifier.
Since reaching the finals, Sweden have been beaten in a friendly against England at Wembley but then enjoyed successive wins over Bahrain, Croatia and Iceland to approach the finals in good form.
