Ronda Rousey Not Rushing Next Fight, Responds to Cris Cyborg: “She Knows Where I'm At”
UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey finally finished a fight with something other than an armbar.
A small part of her always likes to employ her favorite technique, but on Saturday night at UFC 170, Rousey used what may become a new favorite, a knee shot to the liver to down Sara McMann in their Olympian vs. Olympian main event.
“It’s extremely satisfying,” Rousey said in her post-fight interview on Fox Sports 1 after finished McMann at the 1:06 mark of the opening round. “I promised my coach that I would do it. I promised him that I’d drop her with a body shot.
“I can’t wait to see what people will come up with to complain about this time.”
What people are complaining about this time is how quick the stoppage was, but that’s really out of Rousey’s hands. You can criticize referee Herb Dean all you want, or call it a UFC conspiracy, but at the end of the day, Rousey sent McMann to the mat with a knee to the liver.
So now she gets to shift her focus to a number of other topics: her next fight, her next movie, Cris Cyborg.
Cyborg has been a virtual thorn in Rousey’s side ever since the UFC opened up a women’s division.
The Invicta FC featherweight champion took advantage of the hype surrounding Rousey’s latest defense to take another shot at her, issuing a statement to Inside MMA on Friday night, declaring a plan to drop down to 135 pounds so, as she said, “[I can] retire you like I did Gina Carano.”
Rousey responded to Cyborg’s comments by expressing interest, but generally shrugging her off.
“Of course I’m interested in it, but she’s the one that asked to be released by the UFC like the day after they announced out-of-competition drug testing,” said Rousey. “I’m not going anywhere. She knows where I’m at.”
UFC president Dana White said at the post-fight press conference that a Cyborg vs. Rousey fight in the UFC could be possible if Cyborg takes a couple other fights at 135 pounds elsewhere first. So time will tell the tale on how that situation plays out.
Rousey will next head back in front of the cameras not to fight, but to take one of the lead roles in the upcoming feature-film version of the hit HBO series Entourage. After having just fought twice in less than two months, Rousey said that “late summer” was a good target for her next fight, but added, “I always told Dana I’ll fight on 24 hours notice if he needs me to.”
As for who is next, Rousey doesn’t exactly know for sure, but does have thoughts about who is deserving of the next title shot.
“I think Cat Zingano is still deserving of the title [shot] whenever she feels better,” said the champ. “But I was really impressed with how Alexis Davis did tonight, so we’ll see whatever the UFC thinks is the right person to bring in.”
Just who is next for Rousey hasn’t yet been determined, but she’ll likely fight either Zingano or Davis next. But after that, maybe the dream fight between Rousey and Cyborg could happen. If the stars align, we may see them fight in the Octagon for the promotion’s 2014 pay-per-view closer.
