The TDS Racing driver leads Spain's Albert Costa (Oregon Team) as they head to the French track desperate to prevent his increasingly confident rival from continuing his comeback.
Bas Schothorst won five of the first six races of the season, but came only sixth and fifth in Russia, and then fifth and fourth in Hungary.
That puts him under huge pressure to get back on top of the podium at the Paul Ricard, but he will be confidence on a circuit where he won his first ever Megane Trophy race last year.
Albert Costa, by contrast, struggled in the first two meetings of the season but then won races in Germany and Russia before winning both races at the Hungaroring to drag himself into the title hunt.
He will face competition for a win from Oregon Team team-mates Kevin Gilardoni, Niccolo Nalio and Fabien Thuner, with Gilardoni in particular looking for a first win after settling in quickly to the Megane Trophy, collecting three podium finishes to date.
