Schlierenzauer refused to jump in the first individual event of the season in Germany last weekend because of strong wind.
And he was under pressure heading into his second jump but soared to a distance of 143 meters to defeat Germany's Marinus Kraus by a slender half a point margin.
He was only lying 15th after a stuttering opener but delivered when it mattered to finish with 273.2 points.
And it denied Kraus a maiden World Cup win while Austria's Thomas Morgenstern also jumped well in the second round to promote himself from ninth to third.
