Ipswich have offered Tommy Smith a new contract to remain at Portman Road.
However, fellow defender Ibrahima Sonko will leave the npower Championship club at the end of this season.
"We've offered Tommy a deal and his agent phoned me to say he's pretty certain that will get sorted soon," manager Paul Jewell told Town's official website. "I don't know the details of the offer but I'm hopeful that one will get done and I'm pleased to get Tommy signed up."
On Sonko, Jewell added: "I spoke to Sonks and we won't be renewing his contract. He's been a terrific lad around the place, had a good influence on a lot of people and did a really good job for us at the start of the season when we were struggling for a centre-half.
"But I just felt it was time for us to try something different and I wish him all the best for the future."
New Zealander Smith, 22, has come through the ranks at Ipswich to establish himself in the first team following loan spells with Stevenage, Brentford and Colchester, while the last of Sonko's 19 league starts this year came in February's 3-2 win at Coventry.
