The Italian veteran needed just over an hour to beat the Frenchman 6-3 6-0 and earn a second round match against Slovakia's Lukas Lacko.

Polish seventh seed Lukas Kubot made it through safely with a straightforward 6-2 6-3 win over Romanian wildcard Gabriel Moraru.

Xavier Malisse and Matthias Bachinger also made the second round with wins over Grigor Dimitrov and Filippo Volandri respectively.
