The reigning triple champion clocked a lap time of 46’166, making him the fastest bike on the shortened Indy circuit on Saturday morning.
Close on his tail was young Lincolnshire rider Samsung Honda’s Alex Lowes, who was not out of the top three for the entire session. He set a fast lap time of 46'312.
Milwaukee Yamaha’s James Ellison, recently returned to British Superbikes, finished in third with a time of 46’446.
Aussie rider Josh Brookes onboard his Tyco Suzuki machine had a consistent session and finished in fourth. Veteran racer Karl Harris was fifth with an impressive showing on the PR Racing Kawasaki bike.
With seven minutes left in the session there was a red flag when Rapido Sport Racing Ducati’s Matteo Baiocco fell at Clearways. The rider was not seriously hurt.
