After four straight lay days, a building swell enabled organisers to give the green light to competitors.
Local surfers Anthony Walsh and Koa Rothman both impressed with round of 96 heat totals of 12.70 and 12.10 respectively but it was Brazilian Guimaraes who took the honours for attaining the highest score of the day.
Guimaraes scored 12.83 to see off Rothman in the same heat at the ASP World Tour season's first five star-rated event.
Eight of the 16 round of 96 heats were completed on Thursday, with the remainder pencilled in for Friday.
The event on the North Shore of the island has a 12-day holding period, running to February 7.
