UFC 187 Results: John Dodson Decisions Zack Makovsky, Keeps Title Hopes Alive

John Dodson and Zack Makovsky each entered their UFC 187 preliminary headlining bout in Las Vegas on Saturday night looking to earn a shot at flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson.

Dodson entered the fight on a two-fight streak, having last lost to Johnson in 2013. His only issue was that it had been nearly a year since he last fought, having been sidelined with a torn left anterior cruciate ligament.

Makovsky's lone loss in the Octagon was to highly ranked John Moraga late last year. Aside from that unanimous decision loss, he was 5-1 in his last six fights.

Unfortunately, neither scored the splashy finish that might make him a shoe-in for a title shot in his next outing.

While Dodson’s time off due to injury did little to slow him down, Makovsky played the game of physical chess well and made it difficult for Dodson to land with the explosiveness that has become his calling card.

From the onset, Dodson came out firing, looking to overwhelm Makovsky with his speed and power, but Makovsky wasn’t easily bated.

As Dodson slowed a bit, Makovsky tried to score the takedown, but found little success in doing so. Dodson instead sprawled most of the takedown attempts and frequently countered with a knee to the body.

Makovsky seemed to be in a good groove midway through the fight, countering well, but Dodson took a lot of the momentum back when he scoop-slammed him in the latter half of round two.

It was still anybody’s fight going into the final round, but Dodson used his speed to tag Makovsky and continued to avoid his takedown attempts, landing the occasional knee off of the break.

The crowd grew restless as the clock wound down, but Dodson stayed busy enough earn a unanimous nod from the judges.

Dodson kept his title shot hopes alive, winning his third consecutive fight and improving his record to 17-6.
